The version i prefer and stick by is from the
ENCYCLOPEDIA of MYSTICAL & PARANORMAL EXPERIENCE
by Rosemary Ellen Guiley, which is where i will be drawing my descriptions from
in these pages.

a demon is low level spirit that interacts in the affairs of the physical world.
Demons exist in numerous varieties, and may be either entirely good or
entirely evil, or capable of both. They may offer advice or assistance or
be responsbile for bad luck, disease, illness, controlled or expelled by
qualified adepts such as a priest, magician, sorcerer, or a shaman. "Demon"
means "replete with wisdom," and is derived from the Greek daimon,
"divine power," "fate" or "god."
The cost of getting rid of a demon is pretty cheap considering how much it
can cost to get rid of cockroaches, our charge for getting rid of a demon
range from $950 to $3,000 depending on the type of demon,
and as usual Travelling expenses are not included.
